Denise Harmel-Garza

Denise Harmel-Garza is an Extension Associate with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service (AgriLife Extension) in the Wildlife and Fisheries Department at College Station, Texas. Denise earned her B.S. (1994) and M.S. (2001) in Wildlife Science from Texas A&M University. Denise believes that wildlife conservation plays a vital role in connecting people to natural processes.

Denise started her Extension career in 1996 and worked for 11 years. She played a vital role in developing and implementing the 4-H Field and Stream Program. Denise provided fishing, hunting, nature studies and outdoor skills trainings to agents and volunteers. At one time her position was assigned a dual role between Extension at Texas A&M University and Prairie View A&M University.

In addition to Field and Stream programs she provided archery and ROPES challenge course programs to thousands of inner city minority youth attending the H.S. Estelle 4-H & Youth Camp in Huntsville. Through the 4-H Explorers Program she ensured that over 200 inner city youth were able to enjoy and learn about the great outdoors. Denise has provided leadership and organizational support for Becoming an Outdoors Woman, Texas Brigade Camps, Wildlife Management Area Shooting Events for Youth, Texas Chapter of the Wildlife Society Conservation Camp, Texas Youth Hunter Program, and 4-H School Enrichment Modules.

After a 4 year hiatus, Denise returned to AgriLife Extension in September 2011. She is happy to once again be working within the Wildlife & Fisheries Unit on the Hunter Education Program. This program is a partnership among AgriLife Extension’s WFSC Department, Texas 4-H and Texas Parks & Wildlife (TPW). Denise certifies hunter education Instructors and 4-H volunteers within the 4-H Hunting/Wildlife Discipline. She works closely with volunteers, County Extension Agents, TPW and 4-H Clubs. The goal of this project is not only to ensure the sustainability of hunting in Texas, but to increase participation in hunting across the state through grass-roots county efforts.
